Prologue

That night I couldn’t sleep until late. I was admiring being back, remembering everyone and everything that took part in my life. It was good to be back in my room; well it was good to remember it. During my time as a ‘brainwashed’ person or a person with amnesia, everyone tried to help me regain my memory. First they tried asking me questions to see what I remembered, then they brought pictures and videos and finally they would tell me stories about how I got into this family. I also remember that the only person I had more trouble remembering was Ned. Since I forgot who he was I got into a relationship with a Pennsylvania boy named Toby Bryant Elis. We met while I was covering for mom at the antiques store; he was buying his mother a birthday present. From there on he took me on romantic rendezvous… Suddenly, he left to a motel not so far from Glendale. I remember going in his room and finding him kissing another girl while they were allegedly watching a movie. I called Ned and he picked me up. The rest is too painful to remember, that was one of the memories I longed to forget but somehow it wouldn’t go away…

I spent the ten years of my miserable life in a darn orphanage. Parents would come and go, they never even laid their eyes on me; they would always choose someone else instead of me. I wasn’t or am not psychopathic, dumb, mindless, or even crazy. Every parent that came by my desk would look at me and think of me as a bad girl who has been in trouble. I was confused whether my gift was a curse or that God was waiting for the precise moment for my adoption? My gift was very simple, but difficult to tell others about it:

I, Melissa Rose Charlotte Ordon, can see ghosts as clearly as I can see a human body…

I was willing to spend my summer vacation down south in the beach house my aunt was lending us in Tallahassee with my immediate family (mom, dad and my brothers); but Amber and Carly had another idea… They were trying to convince me to stay on campus for the whole summer. I kept on asking them ‘Why…?’ The last day of school was Wednesday May third and my roommates wouldn’t stop trying to convince me, even if I said ‘No’ in a hundred different languages. That day I went back to the hotel where I lived, the Hilton Garden Inn in Washington D.C.  I deliberated for a while making my head hurt out of thinking so much ‘stay or go’ my conscience said. Amber said, and I quote: ‘C’mon Hailey you’re going to miss all the pool parties, the visits to the beach and especially the foreign dudes’ That sentence played in my mind for a while, so long that I didn’t even realize when my mother came home.  “Hailey… have you decided yet?”-My older brother Alan said. He was the only one who came to visit often; my other brothers, Chad and Harold, would only visit once in a while. “No… not quite”-I said honestly exhaling as I still fought with my mind. “Well, honey sorry to break it to you, you have to decide before we leave”-My mother said from the kitchen. We were leaving May fifth, two days after and my mother had the suitcases already prepared. “I will let you know”-I said walking around my room. The hours flew as I brainstormed whether to go or to stay…  I walked the hallways and even disturbed my brother as he and his son had father-son time.  I had decided…

When were you supposed to fall in love? I hadn’t found the perfect match just yet. I mean, everyone finds someone sooner or later, right? It was just not normal for someone to spend the rest of their life alone, living with cats; in my perspective. Well I guess it can be a choice in my life… But, there is someone who I was, as you can say, ‘Chemically Drawn’ to; but not in a romance way just yet. He is the best friend a girl like me could ever have. The story of our friendship started the day I was adopted and does not finish just yet. We were becoming closer and closer by day, and something told me that this would last forever…

Chapter 1- Admirations

I woke up that spring morning to the sound of the birds outside my window.  I stretched, still sitting up straight on my bed. I checked the time and I was late for my intern job at the Grandview Café. I ran into the bathroom saying to myself- “Awesome Melrose you’ve just ruined your first job here in Grandview”. I changed into a pink baggy top, jeans and a pair of black flat sandals. I ran to the bureau to see myself in the mirror and fix my hair. Having curly locks is not easy to manage from time to time. I ran downstairs and took a cab to my job. I just had put away all the negativism in my head and had turned them into positive thoughts; I would whisper to me- “You’re going to make it on time, for sure!” I paid the cab driver for the ride and stepped into the café. “I’m very sorry I am late”-I blabbed to my boss, Janet. “Late… Melrose is this one of your reverse psychology things?”-Janet said joking around. “What do you mean I was supposed to be here by 9:00 a.m. and my clock said 9:30 a.m.?”-I said confused of what Janet said. “Honey, are you okay? Here have a cup of coffee, it is 7:00 a.m. and you don’t start until Tuesday”-Janet said handing me my coffee. “Oh, I guess I was crazy…”-I said chuckling. “Don’t worry… I’ll call you the day you start”-Janet said heading toward the counter. “Thanks Janet”-I said giving a faint smile. I headed to the counter and bought Delia, mom and Ned a cup of coffee. Ned was most likely not to be at the shop, but it was a friendly gesture. I left to the antiques shop shortly after saying goodbye to Janet.

These are supposedly dead zombies. The team that kills them is called The Parish or something like that. It’s so weird how they don’t actually look like zombies. And when you shoot them in the arm, it just explodes off . It’s nasty but cool
